g328. "ONE OF THE MOST DARING MEN" The Life of Confederate General William Tatum Wofford C S.A. by Gerald D. Smith from the Journal of Confederate History Series, Vol. XVI, the John McGlone, Series Editor (PB) The Wofford Brigade is referred to in most accounts of Gen. Robert E. Lee's Army of Northern Virginia. This is the first extensive history of the man who led the brigade, William Tatum Wofford (1823-1884) lived through the American upheaval in the 19" century. This is story from birth to death. Well written. Wofford's grandfather and great-grandfather were both Virginia veterans of the American Revolution. They settled in northern Georgia where William was born. He was a captain in Mexican War and fought for Southern rights in the 1850's. His war record: Colonel,. 18th Georgia Regiment (called 3rd Texas)-- part of Hood's Texas Brigade with the 1st 4th and 5th " Texas regiments 1861-1863. *Brigadier General, Wofford's Brigade -- 16th " & 14th Georgia Regiments, Phillip's & Cobb's Legions, Third Battalion Georgia Sharpshooters -- 1863-1865. ANDERSONVILLE: The Southern Perspective edited by J. H. Seagrs (PB) One of the MOST ''mis-written' episodes in history! The story greatly diminished by time. MANY questions remain. A compendium of essays. "The very name of Andersonville brings to mind a place of infamy...but beyond this, little else seems to be remembered: the collective memory of the nation has grown dim--almost to the point of amnesia. To Southerners it appears that a national jury convened, viewed a prostate subject, & quickly pronounced a verdict of guilty--all on the testimony of select witnesses & without taking time to view the full scope of evidence. Too often it seems that this chapter of American history has been opened & shut, all in one swift motion. ''The national reporting was relentless.....The national war of words over Andersonville became another Confederate defeat. American history texts, the majority being published above the Mason-Dixon Line, had no further need for Southern viewpoints on this subject (or others as well) NOT the WTBS or Yankee version! 191 Pages: $15.00 g387.

FORGOTTEN CONFEDERATES: An Anthology About Black Southerners compiled & edited by Charles Kelly Barrow, Segars & Rosenburg (PB) "One of the lost chapters of C. W. history has the passive & even active support that many Southern blacks, free & slave, gave to the Confederacy. Forgotten Confederates illuminates the overlooked facet of this seemingly contradictory behavior by a group of African-American who appear to have thought of themselves as Southerners first & blacks second. Neither Confederate history nor black studies, can afford to ignore it. (Wm. C. Davis) Kelly, an historical researcher, spent over sire years compiling a large, diverse mixture of material, composed of the following: "archival records, pension applications, official reports, personal letters, photographs, veteran reminiscences, military records, family narratives, book excerpts, newspaper articles, journal selections & published writings of the past & present. "Not unlike their fellow Southerners engaged in the most tragic of wars, black Confederates were a bold & adventurous lot. Although racial inequality & social injustice are also a part of southern history, so is the historic & commonality share by many different races & creeds in the South. The story of Black Confederates should NOT be forgotten. 193 Pages: $15.00, 394P.

VALOR & LACE The Roles of Confederate Women 1861-1865 edited by Muriel Phillips Joslyn (PB) This Is I & foremost a story about the various roles filed by Confederate women during the war. In spite of the constraints of their traditional roles in Southern society. They no only served as nurse & caretaker but also spy, prisoner for their cause & even soldier." "It has often been remarked to me that, when this war is over, the independence of the country will be due, In a great ]measure to the women. Men declared that had the women been desponding they could never have gone through with it; but, on the contrary, the women have invariably set an example to the men of patience, devotion & determination.-- (I,t. Col. J. A. L. Fremantle, British Army Observer in The Confederacy, May, 1863) 186 Pages: $15.00    TAKE A LOOKg395.
